Manitoba Scouts test survival skills

WINNIPEG – More than 300 youth from Scouts Canada tested their survival skills at Camp Amisk, south of Winnipeg.The 45th annual Klondike Derby saw teams of youth from Scouts Canada groups based all over the province participate.In teams of 6-8, the Cub Scouts, Scouts, Girl Guides and Pathfinders pull a sleigh over a 2.5 km course through the woods.“Most of the activities are based on the Scouts program in terms of the skills that they’ve learned like fire lighting, compass and map-reading” said event coordinator Bill Somers.The event started when a small Scouts group from St. Vital held a similar event 45 years ago.
