Golden State Warriors blasted by Trail Blazers in rare rout

The Blazers have won three straight and eight of their last nine, but host the defending National Basketball Association champion Warriors on Friday night in the team’s first game back since the All-Star break.

NOTES: G Damian Lillard became the first Trail Blazer to score 30 points in four consecutive games since Clyde Drexler in November 1991….
Portland’s Damian Lillard scored a career-high 51 points to lead the Trail Blazers to a stunningly dominant 137-105 victory over the NBA-leading Golden State Warriors on Friday.
Charlotte’s Kemba Walker scored 25 points as the Hornets edged Milwaukee 98-95 despite leaving out newly acquired guard Courtney Lee due to lack of training time with the team. McCollum and Lillard scored consecutively before Hayward tied the game with 29 seconds remaining.
“He looked like Steph Curry out there”, Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, smiling.
Rudy Gobert is averaging 10 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks per game this season. “Our mindset now is, ‘Let’s get a fifth, sixth seed, or however it goes, maybe win a series.’ We’r e raising the bar for ourselves, and it’s starting to show”. “They served everything, but we should have put up a better effort, a better fight in the third quarter”. The only point guard scoring more than him is Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry.
“We weren’t as focused as we should be”, said the Warriors’ Klay Thompson, who had 23 points. “That usually doesn’t happen”.
“I think it gives us confidence in what we’ve been doing all along the last three weeks or so”, Lillard said. I made a comment in the timeout, like, reward our hard work that got us back into the game by taking care of the ball and getting good possessions.
Portland had 28 assists on 52 field goals against only 13 turnovers as the Blazers played a more up-tempo game than fans are used to seeing.
“It’s a great feeling”, said Lillard, who also had seven assists, six steals and no turnovers during the game. “In the end, it was just ridiculous”.
Mason Plumlee had nine points and nine rebounds and six assists for the Blazers.
1995-96 Bulls’ record through 53 games: 48-5. Lillard continued to hit ridiculous three after ridiculous three and finished with 51. The 42 points allowed in the first quarter were the most by a Warriors’ opponent in any quarter this season. While Portland might not be the same risky team it was a season ago, the Trail Blazers are still no pushovers.
“It’s just frustrating the way we played in the third quarter after we did all that work to get back in the game”. This could result in Portland easily returning 12 players from a team that outperformed expectations in 2015-16.
Damian Lillard had 30 points and five assists for Portland, which has won 14 of 17 overall. At the start of the season the Blazers weren’t expected to do much, and the playoffs seemed like a best-case scenario.
“He got into a zone twice”, Blazers head coach Terry Stotts said, per the Oregonian’s Joe Freeman.
But the Blazers closed the half with a 7-0 spurt to trail by only five at halftime.
Blazers’ fan Daniel McGunnigle sank a half-court shot during a timeout late in the game to win a 2016 Toyota Prius.
