Manning changed the way we play, and watch, football

According to The Associated Press Manning informed the Denver Broncos he’s going to retire.

“It is with great admiration that I congratulate Peyton Manning for his tremendous career in the National Football League”, Belichick said.
“Peyton Manning revolutionized the game”, Broncos general manager and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway said.
When Peyton Manning called up Frank Tripucka in the spring of 2012, he told the Broncos’ first franchise quarterback that he didn’t want to wear No. 18, the number Manning had worn for 14 seasons in Indianapolis. Even if a few pieces leave in free agency, the defense Brock Osweiler would be leaving behind with the Denver Broncos would be somewhat to significantly better than any team’s defense he would inherit.
Manning played 18 years in the NFL.
Brady said Manning winning the Super Bowl in his final game is “a flawless way to end a career”, a career that Manning has always played under pressure.
Manning was never the best athlete, but his off-the-charts preparation and other-worldly memory recall made him rise above the rest, suggested teammate DeMarcus Ware. He holds the single-season and career record for most passing yards and passing touchdowns and is tied for the single-game touchdown record.
The veteran signal-caller had battled back from the brink of a career-threatening injury in 2011, when neck surgeries forced him to miss the entire season and left him unable to throw properly.
A grim season took a darker turn when Manning was linked in an Al-Jazeera television report to allegations of performance enhancing drugs – claims the Broncos star has angrily dismissed as “garbage”.
It was after that game when the two shared an embrace and microphones picked up Manning saying, “Hey, listen, this might be my last rodeo, so it sure has been a pleasure”, setting off a swirl of retirement rumours heading into Super Bowl 50. “He ran the scout team, which I don’t think he’d ever done, and he dressed out as a backup, which he’d never done”. But when you factor in the playoffs, Manning pulls away into first place with a nice round total of 200. “I’m just glad I was on the same team as our defense”, he said.
During Manning’s senior year, Tennessee won its only SEC championship in his tenure and he finished as runner-up for the Heisman Trophy behind Charles Woodson, the only primarily defensive player to win the award.
Manning’s retirement leaves the Broncos with $19 million in salary cap relief they can use to try to sign his long-time backup, Brock Osweiler, who’s set to become a free agent Wednesday. But after his second Super Bowl title, he’s got more rings than Brett Favre, Kurt Warner or Dan Marino.
