Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said he would rather fail to win a trophy than lose the trust of his players after his decision to field second-choice keeper Willy Caballero paid off in Sunday’s League Cup final win over Liverpool.
Overcome with emotion after Yaya Toure slotted home the winning penalty, Caballero started to cry before being lifted onto team-mate Wilfried Bony’s shoulders and paraded in front of City’s jubilant fans.
The City manager collected the third trophy of his reign after stand-in goalkeeper Caballero, celebrating above, performed heroics to condemn Liverpool to defeat in a penalty shootout at Wembley.
“We tried everything. I can be proud of a lot of things but to be honest I expect we can do these things, so it’s not easy to be proud of things you think is normal”, said Klopp. Liverpool hadn’t won the league cup since they defeated Cardiff City in the 2011-2012 final.
“I am very happy with the squad I manage and I would have preferred to lose the title than to lose my words and not have Willy play”.
The pair were at fault for Manchester City’s goal in the League Cup final after Fernandinho managed to evade Moreno and squeeze a finish past Mignolet’s near post.
“I am sorry for this”, he said, explaining that Daniel Sturridge did not take a penalty because of cramps.
Adam Lallana says Liverpool have quickly switched their focus towards winning the Europa League following their League Cup final disappointment.
The two sides will now rest up after this match and get ready to face off again at Anfield on Wednesday in a Barclays Premier League match. It Is really not the best moment but in the morning we can change everything.
“It was a hard week for me but we had a talk that we could do it, and this is a first trophy for me and my family in Argentina”.
“You know you fall down, but you have to stand up”.
“You have to feel a defeat”, Klopp said after the game.
“You have to feel a defeat, you can’t say it is not important”. Only silly idiots stay on the floor. We played very well against one of the best teams in the country and we can’t dispute that.
