Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem that Trump’s support will weaken as a result of Romney’s comments, KFOR notes. Unambiguous: you will not run for President.
After Romney came out against Trump on Thursday saying Republicans should vote for any other candidate in the primary race, Trump responded by saying Romney begged him for an endorsement when he ran for president in 2012, adding; ‘I could have said, “Mitt, drop to your knees,” and he would have dropped to his knees!’
The governor spoke at a press conference hours after Romney said Trump would be unsafe for the country and assailed the billionaire’s business acumen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Republican Gov. John Kasich (Ohio) in places where they poll as Trump’s greatest adversary.
On “Today“, host Matt Lauer repeatedly pressed Romney on whether there’s any scenario in which the 2012 Republican nominee would be willing to emerge as a consensus candidate later this year in a contested GOP convention.
Mitt Romney has vowed not to support Donald Trump and would rather see a brokered convention than a Trump nomination.
“It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention”.
However, Romney does not believe any of the three men can successfully secure enough delegates to deny Trump the nomination before the GOP convention. “If I wanted to advance Mitt Romney, I would have filed as a person seeking delegates in the various states”. The FEC filing was amended on January 31, 2016, and was filed under the name Romney for President.
Lauer, incredulous, noted that Romney had only addressed the circumstances that he could “foresee”.
The filing also shows that Romney’s presidential bid is clear of all debt and has over $872,000 in the bank.
What do you think about Mitt Romney’s FEC filing?
“I think the odds of a contested convention are very small”, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus said during a Friday interview at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Is Romney banking on a locked RNC?
