In the night’s main event, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will move up to welterweight to take on former lightweight title challenger Nate Diaz. Considering McGregor’s success at featherweight-only 145 pounds-the was more than enough intrigue about how The Notorious would far against Diaz, but everyone was sure that the two enigmas would deliver a show.
Everything was fair game in the expletive laden war, with McGregor insulting Diaz’s fighting style and fashion sense in the span of minutes. The Brazilian fighter withdrew after suffering a broken foot and Diaz was selected among the names floated as McGregor’s new opponent. He believes this is McGregor’s fight to lose.
McGregor’s extra weight should give him added punching power, but it could also affect his quickness not that it worries McGregor, who took on his “Mystic Mac” persona to predict that he’ll stop Diaz late in the first round.
Conor McGregor (L) and Nate Diaz exchange explicit tirades at weigh-in for UFC 196. What a shock that McGregor isn’t unbeatable. According to Mirror, “Irishman McGregor, the rising star of mixed martial arts, is involved in a long-running feud with Pretty Boy Floyd, with the two having spent a number of months sniping at one another”.
McGregor and Diaz hit the octagon Saturday, March 5 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 196.
UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm is another fighter on the card with the win bonus off the table. The fight was since cancelled due to dos Anjo’s injury and was immediately replaced by Nate Diaz.
The one time where McGregor has looked human in the UFC cage was against Chad Mendes, another short-notice replacement, who faced him last July and was able to put him on his back during the fight.
The interview ranged from being labeled by UFC president Dana White as “the greatest interview I have ever seen” to Wells calling it “one of my weirdest interviews ever” to UFC’s Twitter account declaring it “the best thing ever. I’ll fight everyone”, he said. The fight is not expected to go the full route and will likely be over by the first or second round. Holm weighed 1341/2 pounds to Tate’s 135 – right on the limit.
