Emotional Peyton Manning officially retires, looks back at storied National Football League career

Many speculated that Super Bowl 50 would be his last game, but Manning said he didn’t really know until he talked with his five-year old daughter.

On Sunday, Tom Brady wrote a message on Facebook congratulating Peyton Manning on his career.
Could there be a higher compliment? “I’ll miss checking to see if the Giants won and calling Eli”, he said, referring to his brother. “He got better every meeting, every practice, every period in practice”, Fulmer said.
The knock on Manning was that he didn’t win more Super Bowls. “That just shows the kind of guy he is”.
“Well, I’ve fought a good fight”, Manning said.
Even though he left the sport on top following Denver’s Super Bowl victory, the last few months of his career were marred by controversy.
No one’s sure what that will be.
And on a day in which Manning was to recap his career, her question – though tentative – seemed appropriate.
” There’s been plenty of speculation about Manning following an Elway route into the business side of football, or perhaps following the Phil Simms model into the broadcast booth”. Certainly CBS, Fox and ESPN would all beg to have him as a talking head in their studios, and he has the intelligence to be one of the best commentators around.
Manning was taken out of the lineup after nine games because of a foot injury, but eventually rehabbed to the point where he could return to the lineup. “Obviously I’ve been a huge football fan growing up, and have watched a ton of Super Bowls, and walking out on that field for the pre-game warmups – it was about as lovely of setting you could possibly imagine”.
The news, which has trended on social media ever since Peyton Manning made the announcement earlier today, did not only take by surprise the sports community, but it also had a few hip-hop artists commemorating “The Sheriff” on their respective social media pages.
He played his final four seasons in Denver but his prime came during the 14 years he spent in Indianapolis where he led the Colts to two Super Bowls berths, winning the big game in the 2006 campaign. He was drafted first overall in Tennessee in 1998. All after retraining himself to throw following a series of neck fusion surgeries forced him to miss the 2011 season and he was cut by the Colts.
Elway lauded Manning for his exceptional work ethic and leadership, as well as his phenomenal on-field performance, which included a single-season record 55 touchdown passes in 2013, his second season with the Broncos. “I did not do what is alleged”, Manning said. “For me, it’s being a good teammate, having the respect of my teammates, having the respect of the coaches and players”. I am not taking this for granted. “So you don’t need to wonder if I’ll miss it. Absolutely I will”. “I know how much it meant to him”.
Manning’s reputation as a person and player has generally been considered beyond reproach, though two controversies surfaced or resurfaced this year: allegations that he used performance-enhancing drugs and that, as a student at the University of Tennessee, he sat on the face of a female trainer who was treating him.
The team has also produced a glossy program especially for the goodbye news conference that features Manning hoisting the Lombardi Trophy following Denver’s 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers a month ago. “After 18 years, it’s time”. “Like Forrest Gump said, ‘That’s all I have to say about that’”.
Manning is the first and only quarterback to achieve 200 career wins (regular and postseason). He made my job easier. “All the film study Peyton did and the process that he went through with game planning and understanding what the other teams did was second to none”.
