Jeremy Lin, Jeffrey Wright Offended By Chris Rock Distasteful “Asian” Joke

“What about Jamie Foxx?”

“How come it’s only unemployed people that tell you to quit something?” he asked, and also cracked a few barbs at the expense of Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith, who opted not to attend the show. To a roar from the audience, Rock said: “Jada got mad, she said she’s not coming”. Nonetheless, it showed that Rock had no sacred cows.
I recapped Rock’s monologue in my Hollywood Stock Report, Oscar Night edition for Bold. “It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20m to do Wild Wild West”.
Users also pointed out that while much fuss has been made about the lack of black nominees, nothing has been said about the lack of Asian nominees, much less an Asian Oscar victor.
Rock had been widely expected to speak out on the subject, or at least crack jokes about it, after no minorities were nominated in any of the four acting categories for the second consecutive year.
The Hornets guard was disturbed by comments the comedian made while hosting The Oscars on Sunday night.
At one point of the show, Rock introduced the “bankers” from finance firm PricewaterhouseCoopers on to the stage, then it turned out to be three Asian kids with briefcases, as a joke for Asians being good at math.
Then, in another abrupt change of focus, he enlisted his daughters to sell Girl Guide cookies in the auditorium, which brought in a reported grand total of $65,243. He said his community had real things to protest in the 1950s and 60s.
“We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer”.
But the Oscars ceremony has a way of writing its own awkward moments, as when the orchestra played off one of the winners for Mad Max: Fury Road just as he attempted to thank people from Namibia, where the film was made, or when they played off the victor for best documentary short as she explained that her film may help motivate a change in Pakistani law on honor killings.
Democrats know that #BlackVotesMatter, but the programs that they put forward don’t really convince me that they believe that the lives of young blacks matter.
What do you think of Rock bringing these kids up on stage?
“I didn’t see one person wearing the brown ribbon”, he said. He knew exactly what he was doing and was aiming for a bit of controversy. Everything’s not sexism; everything’s not racism.
Of all phrases mentioned in more than 2.4 million tweets on the night, roughly 30 percent of them included a reference to some variant of DiCaprio’s first or last names. I’m sure there were years in the ’50s and ’60s where black people didn’t get nominated. By knowing the worst of the world, we are better armed to fight the awful things. “Y’all would be watching Neil Patrick Harris”. It’s like: “We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa”. “I wasn’t invited. That’s not an invitation I would turn down”. I thought about it real hard. Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars. “They’re not going to cancel the Oscars because I quit”, Rock reasoned. “The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart”. There was a man-on-the-street segment featuring mostly black filmgoers at a theater in Compton, California who hadn’t heard of most of the white-centered movies considered major contenders. “‘Rocky” is science fiction.
