Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has issued an apology for his sending off in the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
Aaron Ramsey gave the Gunners the lead on 38 minutes by flicking Hector Bellerin’s low cross beyond Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal.
Alexis Sanchez’s equaliser saved Coquelin’s blushes but Wenger admitted afterwards that the player could not complain about his red card. It was a carbon copy of a chance moments before for Kane, but while Ospina brilliantly denied the Spurs striker then, he could do little to prevent Alderweireld from blasting home from close range.
Sol Campbell believes Tottenham struggled to cope with the favourites tag in the north London derby on Saturday.
“He made a mistake and he knows he made a big mistake”, Wenger told his postmatch news conference.
Toby Alderweireld levelled with a neat finish from a narrow angle, with a stunning long-range strike from Harry Kane seemed to have completed a remarkable turnaround for the hosts.
“I don’t know because I don’t know what to say anymore about that”, Wenger said of his team’s remaining title chances.
Harry Kane: He may have been out of form heading into the game but Kane has proven he is the man for the big games, especially in London derbies.
“That’s the regret of the day but overall I’m very proud of the players and of their performance”.
“Considering my red card I think it’s a great result for us”, he said.
“We needed a result”.
Pochettino was disappointed Spurs failed to hold onto the lead, but felt his team “played much better than them” and took heart from the fact his side maintained their three-point cushion over their fierce rivals.
“I got the ball out my feet and thought ‘why not?’ and as soon as I hit it, I could see it going to that far post”, he said of his goal – just his second in seven games. “He wanted to do well and mistimed his tackle and got sent off”.
“We’ve got a big FA Cup game against Arsenal to look forward to now and we’ll see where we are when we come back to playing in the league”. We made a mistake at 1-0 when it was 11 against 11 but even though we had a shock loss and it went to 2-1, we refused to lose the game.
