After spending a year in space, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly has returned back on Earth along with cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov. He is the twin brother of astronaut Mark Kelly (who you may also know as the husband of Rep. Gabby Giffords) and the two agreed to be part of a study that would take a look at the effects of space on the body.
Scott kelly gave a grateful and happy reply to the US President!
Kelly touched down at 2:20 a.m. ET, his first stop on American soil. His nearly year-long experiment on the International Space Station will directly inform NASA on the physical and psychological impacts of a human Mars mission.
NASA one-year astronaut Scott Kelly speaks after coming home to Houston on March 3, 2016.
That said, “a year’s a long time”, he told a NASA interviewer shortly after landing in Kazakhstan.
“A really smart person said to me one time, “Teamwork makes the dreamwork in spaceflight”, and spaceflight is the biggest team sport there is”, Kelly said Monday.
The International Space Station is now being operated by the crew of Expedition 47 that has NASA astronaut Tim Kopra in command, along with Tim Peake of ESA (European Space Agency) and Yuri Malenchenko of Roscosmos. Kelly’s 340-day mission on the International Space Station could help pave the wave for future astronauts to visit Mars.
Vice President Joe Biden’s wife, Jill, was also there give Kelly an appropriate American greeting.
One of the primary things researchers will be focusing on is the effect of long-term space on Kelly’s vision, according to Scott.
In addition to the gathered family, Kelly was welcomed by second lady Jill Biden, who brought apple pie and beer for the astronaut.
“As we prepare to go all the way to Mars in the decade of the 2030s, there’s going to be a lot that we’re going to have to learn”, Nelson said.
Command of the ISS will pass from Kelly to his fellow American astronaut Tim Kopra as soon as the Soyuz undocks from the space station, marking the beginning of a new mission, expedition 47.
Everyone has been celebrating the astronauts’ homecoming and it seems like US President Barack Obama was excited as anyone on Kelly’s safe return. “I could go another 100 days”, he said. Kelly’s results will be compared with those of his identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, who served as the control subject on Earth.
“The first feeling, of course, the first impression is the air back on Earth“, he said. “But at the same time, it’s a magnificent place and I’m going to miss it”, he said.
