MMA: Miesha Tate submits Holly Holm to grab UFC title

“She’s a whole different fighter to Ronda”, says Holm of Tate.

Holm famously claimed the title when she defeated Ronda Rousey, who has not set a date for her return to the cage.
Holly Holm won’t wait until Ronda Rousey is ready to fight again to defend her title, and she’ll be back in the octagon at MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday. Her first title-defense has yet to be made, but it boils down to either an immediate rematch with the Preacher’s Daughter or a third showdown with Ronda Rousey. Tate lasted into the third round against Rousey in their fight on December 28, 2013, and she has since won four fights in a row. Hamasaki became the first Japanese fighter to win a major North American MMA title when she wrested the Invicta atomweight belt from Herica Tiburcio in July 2015. Holm, who ascended the rankings in November with her stunning upset of Ronda Rousey, drops one place to No. 3 following the first defeat of her MMA career.
Despite the fact the San Antonio Spurs went 11-1 while Manu Ginobili was out with an injury, there is no doubt about the importance of the 13-year National Basketball Association veteran to the team’s run toward another championship. “Everyone before this fight was saying, ‘Why are you taking this fight?”
Holly Holm attempted to shrug her off, but the rear naked choke was too much and the referee ended the fight.
The tide turned in the second though as Tate managed to score a takedown on Holm. And how insane is it that out of the three fights between Tate and Rousey, Tate is the one to enter two of them as champion. “She’s so calculated with what she does. If you’re making this your career, it’s because you have passion for it and it’s because you have pride”, she said. If she wants to stay out until October, I will let her do that. The former pro boxer fended off Tate for more than 23 minutes only to drop the ball when the contest came down to the wire. She was in movies, people loved her, and she was the best bet to be queen of the UFC for a good, long time. She didn’t tap, instead falling unconscious as ref John McCarthy pulled Tate off, in the process declaring a new champion.
On the bright side for Holm, she can still count on an eventual payday against Rousey, though the loss takes a bit of a luster off of it.
